10 Jan Matthew 16:13-20

13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” 15 He *said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.” 20 Then He warned the disciples that they should tell no one that He was the Christ.

Jesus asked in Matthew 16:13, “Who do people say the Son of man is?” The expression, “son of man” was Jesus’ favorite expression for Himself. It is used over 80 times in the New Testament. It is a title, which emphasizes the Lord’s humanness, His humility, and suffering. So, when Jesus asked His disciples, “Who do men say that I am?”, their reply is interesting. They said, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.” Some people saw Jesus as a fore- runner of the Messiah, not the Christ Himself. Others saw Him as a trouble maker and even worse. People have always been and still are confused about Jesus. Even if you think highly of Jesus, but never understand who He actually is, why He came, or what He did, you don’t know the one thing that will bring you hope. The truth is very narrow on this point. You can make a lot of mistakes in this world, but if you make this mistake, it will cost you eternally. Peter was a man who made some mistakes, but his answer to Jesus’ next question is right on. And it is the only right answer. Jesus turned to His disciples and said, “But what about you? Who do you say I am?” And Peter said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” (And all of God’s people said…AMEN!!!)
