15 May Jonah 1:4, Hebrews 12:6
4 The Lord hurled a great wind on the sea and there
was a great storm on the sea so that the ship was about to break up.
6 For those whom the Lord loves He disciplines,
And He scourges every son whom He receives.”
As a result of Jonah’s sin, God sent a storm. Some translations say “the Lord hurled” the storm. Clearly God was unhappy with Jonah’s disobedience and wanted to get his attention. Make no mistake, sin comes with consequences. Perhaps immediately, as in Jonah’s case, but other times we don’t see it until much later. As much as we may think, or hope, we’ve gotten away with sin, we will eventually pay a price for it. God will send a “storm,” some sort of consequence, with the purpose of getting our attention and ultimately our obedience. Hebrews tells us “the Lord disciplines those he loves.” Much like a parent discipling a child, God is looking out for our good when He disciplines us. He loves us and wants so much more for us, and knows we only find it when we obey Him. Has God been trying to get your attention lately? Or have you experienced His discipline? Remember, He loves you, return to Him!
