01 Sep Matthew 27:23-24
23 But they kept shouting all the more, saying, “Crucify Him!” When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this Man’s blood…”
Remember a week ago Jesus entered Jerusalem to palm branches, crowds shouting Hosanna, and the entire city excited with the news of Jesus’ arrival? A week later those same crowds were shouting to crucify Jesus! In fact, it got so bad that the governor was afraid of a riot. During the Passover celebration, Pilate would free one prisoner, it would be either Jesus or Barabbas. The priests and elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas to be let go. A criminal set free instead of Jesus who healed, a bad guy instead of Jesus who gave hope and taught God’s love.
